It is important to note that we can only filter email messages that come through our servers.  There are various ways in which a virus or worm could bypass our servers and attack your computer directly, such as through programs you download, CD's or diskettes, email received from other sources such as AOL, as well as direct attacks.  So it is important that you also maintain a currently-updated virus scanner on your own computer.  Our scanners provide only a first level of defense, although it is highly effective.

The key difference between our Virus Scanner and the one you may have on your computer is that we update ours hourly.  We see an average of 3-5 new viruses or worms released daily, so these hourly updates can provide you with protection significantly quicker than your existing scanner.

In addition, because we intercept the virus before it even leaves our server, it never reaches your computer.  This makes sure that a configuration error on your system won't expose you to that virus, plus it saves you the bandwidth needed to download the useless message.
